Create engaging, bite-sized learning modules that help users learn and apply knowledge effectively. This article combines best practices, instructions, and practical tips from the Learningbank learning experts.

Define Your Module’s Purpose

Think about why you’re creating the module, what users should achieve, and how long it should take.

Quick Tips:

  • Module length: 5–7 minutes is ideal.

  • Measurable Learning objectives: Use actionable verbs (describe, identify, demonstrate). Avoid vague terms like “learn” or "understand".

  • In what context: modules live inside learning paths. Consider which modules and events they should meet in the path to avoid filling in too much information in one module.

Why, What, How:

  • Why: Explain early why the topic matters.

  • What: Present key information clearly.

  • How: Focus on practical steps users can take to change behaviour/directly apply what they have learned in real life.

  • Lesson: For presenting information or media only.

  • Quiz: Ideal for learning and engaging learners interactively.

  • Survey: Use when you want feedback without tracking individual users by name.

Create, Name, and Theme Your Module

  1. Create your module and give your module a clear, descriptive name.

  2. Choose a Theme – Select a visual style for your module to match your organization’s branding and enhance the learner experience. Learn more here: Content Creator: Settings & Theme.

🧠 Customizing slides
Your theme sets the overall design, but you also have to option to customise individual slides for an extra spark. Click on a slide to open the settings panel on the left, where you can adjust background colours, add images, or change transparency.

Changing the theme will not override the updates made on individual slides



Module Framework

Use this structure to keep content engaging and easy to follow:

  1. Introduction: Explain why, what, and duration.

  2. Topic Slides (text, images, videos, flipcards and more): Design for mobile perspective; 1–2 key messages per slide.

  3. Interactions: Mix quizzes throughout, not just at the end. Enable instant feedback under the interaction settings to greatly improve learning retention

  4. Summary: Highlight 3–5 key takeaways.

  5. Outro: Thank Users and write in transition when relevant

Practical Tips

Now that you understand the module's basis, we can move on to how to use its features.

Create a module

Once you open up a new module, you should start by setting up the theme and afterwards add text, interactions, etc. You add the slides by:

  1. Clicking the '+' icon at the bottom of the screen

  2. In the pop-up, you select your desired slide type

  3. Fill in the slide how you'd like

Good to know💭 If you use a slide type with '✨' next to it, you generate the slide using AI, meaning that it will already be filled in. You should just need to proofread it and adjust accordingly.


Slide types

Depending on the module type you selected in the beginning, you'll have different slide types to choose from.

For both lessons, quizzes and surveys, you can use text, multimedia and images. For Quizzes and surveys, it is expanded with various interactions. Below, you'll see an explanation of the slide headers so you know in what direction you need to go for your desired outcome.

Text

These slides solely contain placeholders for you to add text.

Images

Should you need an image or image + text, then this is the slide type you need to discover.

Multi media

This section is a slide where you embed a file directly into the platform. This could e.g. be SCORM files, PDF's, sound files, Links or video.

Interactions

These slides allow you to have users interact with your content. This could e.g. be single choice questions, match category and many more!

Feedback

When using interactions in your quizzes, it might be nice for users to be able to know which questions they got right and which ones they should spend more time studying in the future. To do this, you follow these steps:

  1. Click the slide containing the interactio,n and a side menu appears.

  2. From here, you go to the Feedback section

  3. Choose Right/wrong answer feedback, and fill in the fields for feedback.

Good to know💭 All interactions come with an image to the right by default. To remove this, click the slide to get the side menu to appear, and under Image, you can either change the placement or remove the image entirely.


General settings

Going to settings and looking at the first tab:

  • Tags – Internal labels that help administrators organise, filter, and manage content (not visible to learners).

  • Estimated completion time – Displays an approximate time to complete the module, helping learners plan their learning and set expectations.

  • Long scrolling – Enables a continuous, scroll-based layout instead of page-by-page navigation, improving usability and mobile learning experiences.

  • Immersive Reader – Adds accessibility support by allowing learners to have text read aloud and displayed in a more focused reading view. More on AI in the next section of this article.

  • On-the-Job Training (OJT) – Supports practical, workplace-based learning by enabling modules designed for real-world tasks and manager sign-off. Read more here.

Here's the options available:

  • Create with Geni

    Quickly generate content on a topic, including text and interactions; you can even ask questions while creating.

  • Ask Geni
    Rephrase or improve text to make it more professional, concise, or polished with AI assistance.

  • Immersive reader
    Let users listen to modules aloud, ideal for desk-less workers or hands-free learning.

  • Suggested by Geni
    This feature is not available to content creators; however, it is nice to know about it anyway. What it does is that it can suggest skills and certificates to your Learning paths and Plans - both using the ones you already have, or suggest brand new ones.


Themes

The Theme settings in the Content Creator allow you to control the visual design of a module. A theme defines elements such as background colours or images, text styling, and overall layout, ensuring a consistent look and feel across all slides.

Here's how you set it up:

  1. Open your module

  2. Go to settings and select Theme.

  3. Select an existing theme from the Appearance tab, or create a new custom theme directly within the module

  4. Choose a background colour or image

  5. Set text and visual styling

  6. Preview your theme

  7. Apply the theme


Languages

The Languages settings allow you to build a single learning module in multiple languages to match users' language preferences. Instead of creating separate modules for each language, you can manage all versions from a single place.

  1. Create a module in your standard language

  2. Go to Settings in the top‑right corner of the module and select Languages (or click the language label in the module header).

  3. Add a new language

  4. Fill in translations manually, via Excel or using the auto translator

  5. Publish when ready

Tips💡

  • Always complete the standard version first to avoid overwriting changes.

  • If you accidentally start in the wrong language, change the module’s language in settings rather than deleting it.


Rewards

Rewards motivate users, boost engagement, and give immediate feedback on performance.

Options:

  • Score pop-up – shows learners their quiz score instantly.

  • Medal or certificate – gives visual recognition or a printable certificate.


You add it in the module Settings > Rewards section of a quiz-type module.


Rating

The Rating setting lets users provide feedback on a module they’ve completed by giving it a star rating and optional comments. This turns learner responses into data you can use to assess and improve your content.

  1. Open the module in edit mode

  2. Go to Rating settings

  3. Turn on the rating feature

  4. Publish the module

After a rating is sent, it can be viewed in the module overview


Preview

It is recommended that you preview your module while building it and also at the very end, so you know exactly what users will see. Remember to check how it looks from different devices so you know how it looks on both phone, tablet and laptop.

You can also decide to build directly in phone view so you can see what users will see while building. This is great to know for organisations where most users access the platform via phone.

Recommendation for Multi-Media elements💭

Videos:

All videos are converted by us to Codec: H.264 (x264) Bitrate: ~2200kbs
This is to achieve compatibility for all mobile web browsers.


We do not change the aspect ratio but recommend max res: 1280x720.

SCORM:
We recommend not using SCORM that are bigger than 2GB. For the best user experience, it is always a good idea to use smaller SCORM files, thus breaking them into smaller parts if it takes more than 5-10 minutes to complete.
